I was annoyed but not surprised to hear Radio Five Live presenter Nicky Campbell interviewing Simon Hughes today not on the basis of what Simon had to say, but on the basis of a series of character assassinations by national newspapers that clearly have an axe to grind with Simon Hughes.
The fact that Nicky Campbell used the Daily Mail as the main source of his attack on Simon should leave nobody in any doubt that Mr Campbell is in need of some journalist's qualifications and should have been consigned to Radio Two when his Radio One days were behind him and he should not have been put in to a prime slot like the Breakfast Show on Five Live.
Anybody who thinks that quoting the official mouthpiece of the Tory Party is clever, objective or even worthwhile in such circumstances shows his or her limitations as a journalist for everyone to see.

Why do Radio Five have to send presenters to Athens ?
Do you ever get the impression that some people at the BBC treat the major sports events as a bloody good excuse to get out of the country on a "jolly" ?
The fact that Nicky Campbell was in Athens this morning was almost lost on me as, putting it simply, he was on the radio ! Why couldn't he speak to people in Athens via a link like they do on other occasions ? Why send him to Athens to report on one news item (the Champions League Final) when all the other news he was reporting on was UK based, so he had to speak down the line back to London.
Just like the world cup last year, too many people at the BBC are a little too profligate with tax payers money. For TV news, yes, I can see why they need to be there as we can see them, but radio ? he may as well have been on Mars !

Another evening, another Tory PPC on Radio Five
Imagine the fuss from Scotland if ...
... the BBC had broadcasted a special programme all about England on St Andrews day !
Well that is what BBC Five Live's Drive programme was doing today, but in reverse. On St Georges Day, Five Live were doing a special programme broadcast from Scotland all Scotland.
You couldn't make it up !
P.S. And in this special, how many dim Scot's did they broadcast saying "if we get independence England won't get out oil money". Firstly, an international boundary at sea is likely to put part of the North Sea oil fields in to English waters anyway and secondly, if we can't tough "their" oil money, then let's make sure they don't get "our" money from the City of London.

The ignorance of Radio Five Live
BBC Radio Five Live's "Drive" show seemed to be giving an object lesson in ignorance today when within the space of 10 minutes today they claimed two things that were not true.
Firstly they claimed that MP's were set to get an extra £10,000 a year, then they stated "on top of their wages". Now I am on record as being no fan of this £10,000 a year allowance for MP's to keep in touch with constituents, but what it most certainly isn't is a £10,000 bonus to MP's wages, which is what Radio Five Live were implying.
Secondly, was the comments they made about teachers pay discussing Gordon Brown's statement that people should accept lower wages in order to help reduce inflation. Their education correspondent claimed that teachers had "done very well in recent years from pay rises" and went on to claim that "teachers had done well this year because they got a two year deal guaranteeing them a 2.5% pay rise this year".
Actually, if he knew the facts, he would have known that the teacher's pay deal was a two and a half year deal, meaning that last year we had to wait an extra 6 months before we got our less than inflation pay rise, and this year we can expect 2.5%, again less than inflation, and hardly a "good deal". Yes it may be better than other public sector workers, but to claim teachers had done "well in the last six years" was a joke.
