Whatever Gordon Brown and Labour might be trying to spin today, there are certain truths that they cannot hide about Ruth Kelly resigning.
1) For many months it has been openly known that Ruth Kelly has been unhappy at the direction of the Brown government.
2) She has been a mother and just as needed by her family for the last 11 years, so why now it is so important to spend time with her family, people will have to draw their own conclusions.
3) Somebody in the Labour Party leaked the news to the BBC for malicious reasons in order to undermine Gordon Brown's good news from yesterday. They must also have known that the BBC and other news organisation would be fully briefed enough to run with the story and give it the profile and "legs" required to keep it as a top news item. A story like this rarely has the legs to survive a whole news day at the top of the agenda without people in the press knowing more than they can actually say.
The truth is, this appears to be yet another orchestrated attempt to undermine his leadership.

Lib Dems highlight Ruth kelly's incompetence - What about Harriet Harman ?
Well done to the Lib Dems for highlighting in a thorough report the utter incompetence of Ruth Kelly in her 12 months as Communities Secretary. The only problem is, we knew it already.
The problem with going for Ruth Kelly is, to put it simply, that she is bloody useless, everyone knows it, voters, opposition MP's, even the Labour Party, yet somehow she keeps her job. Attacking her is going for an easy target.
The other thing that comes to mind is how similar a track record she has to Harriet Harman. Harriet Harman was, in Blair's first term, an extraordinarily useless Minister, presiding over debacles, cock-ups and failing services whilst always following the party line and hiding behind the spin generated from Number 10 (incidentally, this is the same spin she now denounces - hypocrite ?). It wasn't for nothing that Harriet Harman was also known as "Harriet Harmthem". Yet because Harman went away, hid in the back benches for some time people have forgotten how useless she was and now, she's a candidate for Labour Deputy Leader.
Perhaps Ruth Kelly should take a leaf out of Harman's book, perhaps she should also spend more time in her constituency. Looking at Ruth Kelly's majority, it seems she isn't long for the Commons anyway.

Equality Minister Fighting For Inequality : Independent
The Independent reports that Ruth Kelly, the Minister for Equality is trying to get an exemption for Roman Catholic charities to turn away gay couples seeking to adopt.
The devout Catholic minister and member of the "opus deii" sect, if "The Independent" report is correct, would therefore be allowing a personal religious issue to get in the way of her duty to ensure equality.
If this is true, it will be an absolute disgrace. No doubt like last time I posted about Ruth Kelly I will get journalists from the Catholic Times jumping to her defence, but I would ask, is she really fit to be a minister for equality ? She's shown why she can't be an education minister but what job can she be given that she won't show a personal prejudice in ? Perhaps Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
