The wrong time for Norfolk Tories to be cutting funding to the careers service
In good economic times I am sure there are many who just walk in to jobs straight from school or university who never have to seek advice from anyone before joining the working population. In hard times, many people, but especially school leavers need to know they are getting the right advice. That is why it is beyond comprehsnion that Norfolk County Council Tories are to half the Connexions career service in a mass cull of jobs.

We know the County has to make cuts, but why not start with cutting perks to councillors, perhaps halving the entertainment budget for theleader Chairman of the council (which the Tories raised by tens of thousands a few years ago). It seems illogical to hamper the future of Norfolk school children finding the right courses and jobs in order to save money. This is short term in its savings as it will have a long term effect on the county. But its typical of the Tories to think about the short term, not the big picture.

Never before has a boundary commission proposal been so lambasted and opposed
A group of Norfolk councils today launched another strand of the attack on boundary commission proposals to scrap every district in the county and instead have one unitary County Council, which just to confuse matter more will include a large part of Suffolk).
The option the boundary commission chose was no organisation's preferred option, indeed, it was not even on anyone's list of options at all.
I have been told by a few sources that a meeting held recently between some MPs and the Boundary Commission left the Boundary Commission absolutely shocked that not one MP could find anything at all to say in favour of the proposal, such has been the utter incompetence of the Boundary Commission's thought processes.
The only hope for Norfolk now is that someone in government can see how ridiculous the proposals are and they might save the councils and council tax payers having to fork out for the legal costs of opposing the proposals.

Norwich Northern Bypass = Planned traffic chaos
The proposals published today by Conservative run Norfolk County Council for the new Northern Bypass, or NDR as it is called, are detailed and answer some questions. However, the plans fail in one key area, that being that it is not a bypass ! Read the EDP report HERE.
The failure to include the final link joining from the Fakenham Road to the Southern Bypass means that the new road will deposit many thousands of extra cars each day in to Taverham and Drayton, and once there, there will be no final link up to the Southern by-pass, thus forcing all these cars through the narrow roads of Ringland, Honingham and Costessey.
It is simply not good enough for the Tories running county hall to come up with a solution to a smaller problem North and East of the city to then create a bigger problem to the North West. Yes, there are environmental concerns, but what about the concerns of residents in the areas that will be most affected.
How will people from Fakenham and North Norfolk get to the Southern bypass. Simple, they’ll go the old way, through the villages, as they always have, because driving clockwise round the NDR to Postwick to join the A47 is a 40 mile round trip. It isn’t going to happen, and trying to force people to do so is hardly going to help the environment. We need a proper by-pass that links the whole NDR on both sides to the Southern by-pass. This plan from County Hall is what can be called simply planned traffic chaos or planning blight !

Norfolk County Council's Latest Insult
Am I the only person who finds the quote from the Cabinet Member for children's services, Cllr Rosalie Monbiot, regarding the cost to students of the increase enforced by Norfolk County on students the slightest bit insulting ?
Quoting directly from the EDP, she said "“That £83 increase is less than a pint of beer a week". Why do people instantly relate the cost to drink when they refer to students ? Yes, there is a stereotype of students drinking all the time, but can I remind the Conservatives who run County Hall that not all students are drinking beer all the time, many find it difficult to make ends meet and those most directly affected by this Tory cut will be 16 and 17 year olds, who should not be drinking anyway.
It's like putting up the price of school dinners for primary school children then telling kids its only the cost of a packet of cigarettes each week.
I know Norfolk County Council are facing severe financial problems (not enough though to prevent them increasing the budget for entertainment by several tens of thousands of pounds per year), and they have difficult decisions to make. However, they should show more sense in the language they use to justify their actions and they should think more about how the language they use might enflame passions and/or pander to stereotypes that are not always true.
