When it comes to defending the coastline what comes first for Labour - England or Bangladesh ?

It is well known that due to climate change and global warming the coastline of the low lying east of England is at greater risk than ever from flooding.

Any visitor to North Norfolk can go to Happisburgh and see the peril many householders feel as each year more and more of their parish falls in to the sea whist the government tell us that they do not have the necessary £30 million needed to protect the whole of the North Norfolk coast. Similarly parts of Suffolk around Southwold have effectively been written off by the government and will be allowed to flood.

This might be acceptable were the government as strapped for cash as they claim.

But today I read that the government is to give £75 million to Bangladesh to help protect their coastline from flooding.

I've always felt the old saying "Charity begins at home" has some meaning. Clearly Labour's priority lies with the people of Bangladesh and not with the people of England.

I await howls of derision from Global Warming deniers

It appears that a meeting of governments, the worlds leading advisers and experts on climate change all agree. Climate change is with us and large parts of it are irreversible.

The most worrying part of their report was also that the changes we may have may be quite sudden. We are not talking about sudden in the way it happened in the film "The day after tomorrow", which had climate change happen in one day, but global temperatures could rise by 3 or 4 degrees Celsius in just a few decades.

It might make Britain a nice place to live, we it not for the fact that 35% of the country will be under water.

I now await a torrent of abuse from Tories who claim that they now one scientist (some even know two) who claim that it is all made up as part of some world conspiracy.

Update : And sadly I was proved right. All the Tories did queue up to have a go at me for writing this.

I now await the sceptics

As soon as I saw this story on the BBC website, I assumed that within days there would be a load of Tories denying it, claiming instead that it was a conspiracy theory, there is no scientific proof of obesity and it might be due to sun spots and solar activity instead.

How to solve global warming - Put train fares up by more than inflation ? Well that's what this government think anyway.

I though this government had set targets on reducing carbon emmissions ?

I ask this because surely putting the price of rail fares up by more than inflation will surely encourage more people off the trains and in to cars on on to low cost airlines.

Is it me or are the government's words on climate change shown to be vaccuos and hollow when they allow such rises ?

Surely it is time for the government to introduce some more green taxes ( like the green tax switch, as proposed by the Lib Dems) which would provide a greater subsidy of the railways which, in turn, would allow people to really opt for rail in place of cars or airlines.
