Putting the "Great" back in to "Great" Britain

If there is one thing that really gets my back up it is people who say that something "puts the Great back in to Great Britain", seemingly totally unaware that the name "Great Britain" refers to the island we live on, not actually the name of our country.

Watching the news tonight I saw some bloke making this statement when talking about HMS Daring, the new Royal Navy destroyer.

Perhaps it is a sad reflection on our country at the moment that this chap actually believed what he was saying.

Our country is also called Great Britain.

I think I get your point, even if not well expressed. The country is going to the dogs let's make it great again?

No actually, our country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, this making clear that our country is made up of those territories, not those countries.

Prior to the splitting of Ireland, the country was The UK of GB and I.

No. I have known this for many years. I am something of a patriot (not a nationalist) and make a point of knowing such things.
