The Tories are right when they say a raft of new legislation about carrying knives is not needed because existing laws do the job, if only they were enforced.
This government is too obsessed with passing laws rather than enforcing them. It's like some teenager in his bedroom making up a set of plans and rules for when "he rules the world", except Labour do rule the country, they just don't look like it.

It always amazes me when authoritarians fail to understand such a simple thing, especially because their schemes never work half as well as a cooler, less panic-driven approach would.
A repressive, punitive society which ignores the causes of crime is going to become a high-crime society. That is why crime soared under Thatcher.
Of course, the Tories are guilty of it too, so it's hardly their place to bitch when they wouldn't stand up to the Daily Hate Mail and impose a policy that worked.
The whole culture of wanking over how many targets have been met has to end.
The government is obsessed with new laws because they are obsessed with being seen to do something, rather than concentrating on the long-term issues.
I reckon the current bunch of nitwits pass laws because this is the absolutely all they're good for. They don't even pass particularly good laws; most of what they pass is utter shite.
