A meeting held today between the government and two local MP's (Keith Simpson - Mid Norfolk and Norman Lamb - North Norfolk) regarding the future of the RAF Coltishall site has revealed that the Home Office do want an asylum detention centre on the site as soon as possible.
Everyone knows the government has made a bit of a mess of asylum and steps to sort it out are welcome. The proposed 500 jobs would be an enormous boost to the local economy and would prove to be a real shot in the arm for the area. However, there were plans by people willing to invest in RAF Coltishall to make it a technology centre to encourage new businesses to set up there and give existing businesses in North Norfolk the chance to re-locate there and grow. I hope that this option will not be denied North Norfolk.
Obviously local people are going to have great concerns. Security and safety have to be top of the list in terms of local people's worries and quite rightly so. The EDP highlights and number of issues and shows that there is still a lot left unanswered as yet.
