Being phoned by Nick Clegg

This teatime my wife answered the phone only to hear a recorded message from Nick Clegg. Having not seen or heard about the fuss over this "marketing" exercise, she listened for all of seven seconds before putting the phone down.

Turning to me she asked me if I supported this kind tactic as she was deeply unimpressed.

I had to say that I agreed with her. This kind of phone polling seems to me to be counter productive and will anger people. Sadly it detracts from what I thought was an excellent conference speech by Nick. Shame.

During the Livingston by-election 3years ago, the SNP tried this kind of thing. I remember talking to my non political friend who reacted with horror to finding a recorded Alex Salmond on her phone. "What was I supposed to do?" she said, "listen to it?" she said.

But on the other hand, if the others are doing it, don't we have to?

I agree, Whenever I get this sort of call I immediately put the phone down.

I think I must be naive. When I heard about the possibility of Cleggy calling people up after the conference, I thought what a great idea it was. Don't know about you, but I would love to have a chat with him.

Little did I know it would be recorded.

I think the LibDems should embrace technology fully and make use of every advance available to them.
