One of the "good guys" in the Labour Party to stand down

I was saddened to see that Labour MP Tony Wright (the one from Cannock, not the useless one from Great Yarmouth) is to stand down at the next general election because of ill health. It is to be hoped his treatment for leukaemia is successful and that he recovers quickly.

Tony Wright has always struck me as being a sound politician, in that he speaks sense, he can see beyond the colour of the rosette and looks at the arguments, not the party or the personality. The fact that early on in the New Labour years he chose to return to the back benches so that he could be fair and even critical about the direction of New Labour speaks volumes about him.

Tony Wright is, in essence, one of the good guys, irrespective of his party affiliations, and parliament and UK politics will be worse off because of his departure from the House of Commons.

No responses because people don't like nice things being written about MPs. I've met Tony Wright many times, and found him warm, thoughtful, engaging, interested in argument and willing to go against the tide - everything a politician should be. A huge and sad loss to parliament.
