Why ever was Mugabe given a Knighthood by the Tories in the first place ?

I was pleased to see the government had asked the Queen to revoke Robert Mugabe's Knighthood today, but it begs the question as to why the Tories ever thought it was a good idea in the first place.

Mugabe was given the honour in 1994 thanks to John Major's government. Now if Mugabe has been some sort of saint up until 1994 and had only turned bad in the last 14 years, you could accept it, but Mugabe's henchmen had been committing atrocities for some time by 1994 yet he was still rewarded with a knighthood.

Apparently the then Tory government did not consider that the murder by Mugabe's henchmen of more than 2000 (and possibly up to 10,000) opposition activists and supporters was enough of a reason to prevent him being given honours by the Queen ?

Its so odd that our leaders felt that appeasing a tyrrant and a murderer would make him change his ways.

I agree Nich, this is bizarre. However, I can't help thinking that, in light of the horrors unfolding over there, taking aware this gong makes us look very petty.

Grrrrrhhhh!

I note that Iain Dale, who twice failed to get selected as a Tory MP, has the audacity to suggest that Nelson Mandela is a failed leader!

Total Politics?

Total Bollocks more like!

It's even worse now, Iain Dale has this message above his comments box:

"Comment moderation has been enabled. All comments must be approved by the blog author".

And he approved the following comment:

"Anonymous said...

Hang Nelson Mandela!

In my view, this is totally unacceptable. Iain Dale should justify it or delete it. Moreover, David Cameron should withdraw his membership of the Tory party!

I am sure that there is a very established network of banks that are doing very well out of Mr Mugabes despotic regime. How else is he squirreling away his retirement savings for when he eventually bolts?
