Now that's what I call a cover version

I really hate it when bands or groups do cover versions which end up sounding exactly like the song they are covering. A good example is Steps version of Better the Devil you know by Kylie, but there are dozens of others.

So despite the people on YouTube who seem to loathe this, for my money this cover version of Smells Like Teen Spirit, originally by Nirvana but covered by the great Paul Anka (who wrote "My Way"), is a truly brilliant cover version.

To be honest, this doesn't do much for me.

But I saw his version of Van Halen's "Jump" on TV a year or so ago, and that I really liked....

It's a testament to Kurt's songwriting ability. In the main good songs 'work' no matter the arrangement and can be recorded in a huge variety of ways. Despite the grunge thing and the fact that we was uber-cool Kurt is on record as being a huge fan of well-constructed pop music (he loved Abba) and his songs, underneath the heavy guitars, are very, very well written.

Anka's cover just proves that...
