This is a human being, heir to the flaws of mind and character that makes a man. He erred, took his punishment, is rehabilitated and is now trying to improve a penal system in some disarray.
He did not deserve a lot of what was heaped on him by the press today. (No, I'm not a Tory troll, chair of my local Lib Dem branch.)
Let's not forget what he did ? Perhury. Ir wasn't speeding, it wasn't an assault, he told lies and had the nerve to make s speech about the "sword of justice and British decency" to defend himself. He lied and persuaded others to lie. Dreadful.
Seeing as it can never be said anyone has ever paid their debt then lets execute anyone convicted of anything 'unforgivable' then - but we don't do we?
It may have been enough of a shock to his system to have made a difference. Not saying it did, but it may have.

A common criminal, me ? No, I am a posh Conservative landed gentry criminal.
I want Setanta Sport If I ever have to go back in that place!
What will I do now ? Ahh, my old Tory chums will give me a job.

Now for the uncommon criminals... where did I put Adnan Khashoggi's phone number?
Actually, the charge was trumped up so as to hide the real reason for me going inside...a fact find mission for the Centre for Social Justice.
Let's give him the benefit of the doubt:
"I didn’t realise what it was like. Maybe I can do something about it, nothing to loose by trying now…"
