Andrew Flintoff - Pull the other one !

Has Andrew Flintoff been given a "stock" excuse for defeat that he must repeat each and every time England are humiliated at cricket ?

The tired old line "We tried our best but it didn't quite come off for us" is the sort of excuse you offer when you lose a match narrowly once. It could have been said after the first test debacle as an excuse. After the second test, in which England spectacularly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, he might just have been let off for saying it. But to repeat this silly "it didn't quite come off for us" line ad nauseum is boring, demoralising for fans of English cricket and fails to acknowledge a simple truth, that being England were awaful and were excrutiating to watch!

Recognising your faults and mistakes is the key to preventing them happening again. Flintoff's sorry excuse does little to raise any confidence in me that things will be put right by 2009 !

Saying that England did that in the second test is well overstating the case (and being repeated ad nauseum on 5Live)

England were never in more than a strong position in the second test (except possibly when Aus were 70odd for 3 and Ponting was dropped).

Certainly going into the final day England were 97 ahead with one wicket down. There were only two likely results on offer a draw or an Australian win. An English win would have required scoring 200 odd and declaring in time to bowl Australia out - prob at least a session and a half. Both of which were highly unlikely.
