And some people still argue that global warming is not happening

According to a BBC report, snow levels in Europe are so low this year, that the start of the skiing season will have to be delayed. Read the report HERE.

I don't need to go to Europe to know this, after all, I keep finding that my lawn keeps growing, something that usually only happens at about 12 or 13 degrees celcius, so I know this is true. However, there are some, mainly American, but also some British, with interests in the fossil fuel industry, who maintain that global warming is not happening.

I would urge them to use the evidence of their own eyes and stop all this phoney science that says global warming is not happening. It is and we need to do something about it now.

I agree.
My mum, sister and family live in the Australian Alps, my brother in law is a partner in www.snowshow.tv so they need the snow - it was the same in their season just gone terrible lack of snow - and they are getting some of the worst bush fires ever now see http://duncanborrowman.blogspot.com/2006/12/major-bush-fires-hit-victoria.html

I know of few people who seriously argue the climate is changing and global temperatures are rising, however, there is a lot of uncertainty over the rate of the rise and the reasons.

Again, CO2 emmissions are recognised as a cause by almost everyone, but there is a lot of doubt whether the alarmists are correct or even whether its a significant part of the equation.

This is vastly different from denial, but if you dare say it you are accused of denial.

Whatever the causes, the solution is not targetting SUVs or buying locally produced food, the solution is green taxation on a global scale and raising people out of poverty and raising the wealth of the world and technology research to find better ways to do things (and new things to do).

If we can factor in the costs of pollution (of all types) into financial terms then we can just sit back and let the market work. Unfortunately nobody is willing to do this on a global scale, at least the LibDems have started proposing national green taxes though.

You are kidding me right? The evidence you have that confirms Global Warming is real to you is there is no snow in France for skiers and you have your t-shirt on?
Man now that is science!

There are so many global warming theories out there its ridiculous to take it seriously.

We don't know. The atmosphere is very complex with millions of variables and the longer you watch these "scientist" and their studies and results the more you learn they don't know. However if you are going to be in 12-15 C with your shirt off and thats enough evidence for you. That sounds about as scientific as every other theory on Global Warming! Cheers!

Eric, your theory seems to be that beacuse there are so many possible contributory causes to global warming, you cannot take it seriously. The fact that there are so many possible causes leads me to think that it is a big problem, you don't.

I guess you live somewhere that won't flood if sea levels rise. unfortunately, I do.

The fact that now the 11 warmest years in recorded history have all been in the last 15 years must point to something ?

Glad I live up a Yorkshire hill and can sail. Anecdotal evidence ain't science, but should not be dismissed because it's helping to convince people that something is amiss with the climate. Climate science is incredibly complicated, especially atmospheric modelling, so there is room for doubt a to what causes the effects. Farting cows today, another theory comes along next week. What ought to be clear to everyone is that human societies face a raft of problems: soil degradation, collapse of ecosystems, water shortage, uncertain energy supplies, overconsumption, the threat of pandemic disease (that's a when, not an if) and add to that increassing climate instability caused by global warming and we are into interesting times.

For anyone interested in climate change I'd strongly recommend this the blog real climate:

I am not going to argue the world isn't warming or cooling what ever trend you want to be on. I am not going to be spoon fed by the media and doom sayers this hysteria. I honestly don't know who to believe. There are so many theories out there its impossible to any of them to have credance right now. As recent as 1998 NASA forcasted Earth Temperatures trend would be cooling (http://www.sepp.org/Archive/reality/NASA98temp.html). In 1974 Time magazine wrote an article called, "Another Ice Age?" (http://www.junkscience.com/mar06/Time_AnotherIceAge_June241974.pdf). In conclusion it seems like the earth is doing what it does regardless to whatever the trend is for us to write and study about.

Let's step away from Global Warming for a moment. Let me post an excerpt of Michael Crichton's "Aliens Cause Global Warming"

I regard consensus science as an extremely pernicious development that ought to be stopped cold in its tracks. Historically, the claim of consensus has been the first refuge of scoundrels; it is a way to avoid debate by claiming that the matter is already settled. Whenever you hear the consensus of scientists agrees on something or other, reach for your wallet, because you're being had.

Let's be clear: the work of science has nothing whatever to do with consensus. Consensus is the business of politics. Science, on the contrary, requires only one investigator who happens to be right, which means that he or she has results that are verifiable by reference to the real world. In science consensus is irrelevant. What is relevant is reproducible results. The greatest scientists in history are great precisely because they broke with the consensus.

There is no such thing as consensus science. If it's consensus, it isn't science. If it's science, it isn't consensus. Period.
